COVID 19 Update

Dear Customers,

We at The Poet have been watching all the news and announcements concerning the current pandemic, along with all of you, and trying to decide what is in the best interests of our staff and valued customers.

We have evaluated providing a takeaway and free delivery locally and also a shopping service for those of you who are self isolating.

However given the severity of the situation around Europe and the current government guidelines on social distancing we feel it is most prudent at this time to protect peoples health and encourage people to adhere to the policy rather than encourage them to break it.

As a result, for the sake of public health, we will not be opening our doors or offering Takeaway Services until the picture is clearer.

About Us

The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

Mother's Day

Due to the closure of The Poet at Matfield, following Boris Johnson’s announcement about closing bars and restaurants, we will be offering a Mothering Sunday takeaway service so our mums do not miss out.

This will be a collection only service from 12-6pm and taking card payments over the phone to minimise the risk of social contact. We are offering a 3-Course meal at £25.00pp. We can also provide you with wine by the bottle with 30% off.
