    About Us

    The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

    In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.


    World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

    Thank you for your continued support.

    With our reopening in April 2021 has come the need for new procedures, to keep both our guests and the Poet team safe. We will guide you through these changes during your visit.

    UPDATE: We request that diners wear a face mask upon entry until sat a table, and would please wear one at all times when not sat at their table (ie when visiting restrooms etc). 

    We strongly advise you to pre book your table. Due to restricted numbers, we are unlikely to
    be able to accommodate walk ins.
